Bacteriostatic water 10ml is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative, supplied in a multi-dose vial for reconstituting lyophilised research peptides. The preservative inhibits microbial growth so a single vial can be drawn from repeatedly over a research period. It is supplied strictly for laboratory research use only.

What Is Bacteriostatic Water?
Bacteriostatic water is purified, sterilised water to which benzyl alcohol has been added at 0.9%. The benzyl alcohol does not sterilise the vial contents after opening; it prevents bacteria that enter through repeated needle punctures from multiplying. That is what makes it the standard multi-dose diluent for laboratory peptide work, where a single vial may be used across many reconstitutions.
Our bacteriostatic water 10ml is the same diluent we recommend for every lyophilised peptide in our range. For a step-by-step method, see our guide on how to reconstitute peptides properly.
How Bacteriostatic Water Is Used in Peptide Research
Reconstituting Lyophilised Peptides
The most common use is dissolving freeze-dried peptide powder to a known concentration. Water is drawn from the vial, introduced slowly down the side of the peptide vial, and the vial is swirled rather than shaken so the peptide dissolves without foaming.
Preparing Working Dilutions
Once a stock solution has been made, bacteriostatic water is used to prepare serial dilutions for cell-culture or analytical work.
Extending Solution Shelf Life
Because the preservative suppresses microbial growth, reconstituted peptides last longer in bacteriostatic water than in plain sterile water. See how long reconstituted peptides last.
Bacteriostatic Water vs Sterile Water for Injection
Sterile water contains no preservative and is intended for single use: once the vial is punctured it should be used immediately. Bacteriostatic water contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol and can be drawn from repeatedly for up to 28 days. For most peptide research protocols, bacteriostatic water is the practical choice; plain sterile water is reserved for assays where benzyl alcohol would interfere.
Why Researchers Choose Bacteriostatic Water from ThePeptideCode
- Sterile and non-pyrogenic: manufactured to pharmaceutical-grade sterility standards.
- Multi-dose format: 0.9% benzyl alcohol allows repeated withdrawals from one vial.
- Compatible with our full range: the diluent we recommend for every lyophilised peptide we stock.
- Bundle-friendly: add a vial to any peptide order so reconstitution can begin on delivery.
- Fast UK dispatch: in-stock items are dispatched within one working day.
- UK Express delivery: £6.99, free on orders over £100.
Quality Control
Each vial is sealed, sterile and clear on inspection. Do not use a vial if the seal is broken, if the solution is cloudy or discoloured, or if particulate matter is visible. Certificates for the peptides you reconstitute with it can be found on our verification and testing page.
Storage and Handling
Store unopened vials at room temperature, protected from light. After the first puncture, keep the vial refrigerated at 2–8°C and discard any remainder after 28 days. Always swab the stopper and use a fresh sterile needle for each withdrawal. Our storage guide covers handling of reconstituted peptides in more detail.
Research Use Only
Bacteriostatic water 10ml is supplied strictly for laboratory research. It is not a medicine and is not for human or veterinary use. By purchasing, you confirm that the product will be used solely for lawful laboratory research.
Bacteriostatic Water 10ml FAQs
What is bacteriostatic water?
Sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol, a preservative that prevents bacterial growth so the vial can be used for multiple withdrawals.
How long does bacteriostatic water last once opened?
Up to 28 days when refrigerated at 2–8°C and handled aseptically. Discard any remainder after that.
How much bacteriostatic water do I add to a peptide vial?
That depends on the target concentration for your protocol. Our reconstitution guide explains how to calculate the volume.
Can I use sterile water instead?
Yes for single-use reconstitution, but plain sterile water has no preservative, so the reconstituted solution should be used promptly.
Does benzyl alcohol affect peptides?
At 0.9% it is compatible with the vast majority of research peptides. Check the peptide’s batch documentation if your assay is sensitive to benzyl alcohol.
Is bacteriostatic water for human use?
No. It is supplied strictly for laboratory research and is not for human or veterinary use.
